Challenge 1

6/26

Annadelle's Final Challenge
Annadelle’s challenge for today is to make her own comic book.
This is something I am super passionate about because I myself have always enjoyed reading comics, and now that I am an adult I like reading graphic novels. I also took a class as an undergraduate about comic books and graphic novels. The comic book industry has mostly been ran by men for many years, but recently, maybe in the last 20 years or so, there have been more and more women making comic books and graphic novels. Below I have some included some links to some resources for her. I am also working on a video on my ipad for her. I definitely want to encourage her to make her own comics, and I wanted her to have resources, and a video she can look back at if she wants to keep writing them in the future.
These books have concepts that might be a little advanced for her but they are both amazing resources for anyone who wants to make comics:
  1. Understanding Comics: The Invisible Art by Scott McCloud
  2. Making Comics by Scott McCloud
Next are some youtube videos that will help her:
This is an entire series for young comic book artists on Dave McDonald’s youtube. Here are some I think would be helpful for her today.
Here is an article on making comic books:
Here is a masterlist of kid appropriate applications for making comics:
Annadelle told me she did not have a printer at home, but I wanted to share them anyway to have as a resource if she gets a chance to print them:
Finally, here are some basic instructions for helping her make her comics:
She will need:
Paper
Pencils
Anything she wants to color with.
She can staple pages together to make a longer comic, but if she has a sketch book she can keep them all in there.
  1. Brainstorm: Think about the characters you want to have in your comic. Think about what you want to happen.
  2. Draw your panels: Panels are where we show what is happening in the comics. Panels do not have to be just squares, circles, or rectangles. They can be diamonds, hexagons, or anything you want. They also do not have to be all the same size. A ruler is very helpful while doing this!
  3. Draw your chat boxes: These are where your characters will talk, and talk to each other. You do not have to write what they will say or think right now, but it is good to draw these before you start drawing your characters so you can make sure you have room for what you want to write.
  4. Start drawing your characters, or writing your character’s words, or thoughts. You can do this in any order. You can draw everything at once, or you can write everything first, or you can do the writing and drawing for one panel at a time.
  5. When she is drawing, it is good to sketch first then draw harder lines over the sketches but she does not have to do this.

Challenge 1

6/25

The goal for today is to explore the universe, while learning new art techniques!

Draw something from outer space. This can be the moon, a galaxy, a planet, star, or anything else you can think of using your chalk and black paper. Chalk works really well because it shows up great on black paper. This is one way you can draw things that need a black background! You can get creative by adding glitter, stickers, or anything else around your home you might want to add. To keep the chalk from rubbing off on everything, your parent can use hair spray over top to help it stick!

Challenge 2

6/25

Second challenge: Use magazine clippings to make a collage of outer space. You can make anything in outer space like planets, stars, the solar system, or our moon. You will need glue, magazines, and scissors for this challenge. Be sure to get parent permission to cut magazines you have.

Challenge 1

6/24

Create something new using SCAMPER.  Choose an item you would like to modify.  Think about how you can:

  • Substitute (What materials can you use instead of the original material to improve the item?)

  • Combine (What would happen if you combine this item with another item to create something new?)

  • Adapt (How could you adapt this item to serve another purpose?)

  • Modify (How can you change the shape or size (larger or smaller) of this item to improve it?)

  • Put to another use (Can you use this item for another purpose?)

  • Eliminate (What would happen if you took away part of the item?)

  • Reverse (How could you change the order or reorganize the item?

Challenge 2

6/24

Using a song of your choice, design a short dance using four or more animal movements as choreography.  Think about the way a bunny hops, a lion hunts, a snake slithers, or a bird flaps its wings.   What other animal movements can you think of that feel like a dance?  Here are some examples:

Young naturalists: Make art from things you find in Nature. You can make this art outside, and take a picture of it, like the famous artist Andy Goldsworthy. You could also find some things in nature you like, bring them inside, and use what you find to make art. If you make something outside, take a picture to share it with your group!

Here’s Coach Laura Thompson going outside into nature!

Challenge 2

6/23

Reduce, reuse, recycle: find some trash in your house. This can be old magazines, cardboard, plastic, tin foil, newspaper, or anything else you can think of that your parents are okay with you using then make a piece of art with it.
